Success through Skills Training – November 2016

Kerry came to the Port Moody WorkBC Employment Services Centre, while in receipt of EI Benefits and seeking assistance to help her find sustainable work after her temporary position as a junior associate in the accounting field ended. Through recruitment and temporary employment agencies, she had an employment history of unsustainable administrative, technical and operational bookkeeping roles at production facilities.

Kerry was referred to Work Targeting workshops and completed labour market and training research. In working with her Case Manager it was assessed that her difficulty obtaining full time employment in the accounting field was due to lack of formal training and certification in the industry, specifically; bookkeeping, accounting fundamentals, and computerized accounting, in spite of her administrative and book keeping experience. Kerry applied for Skills Training support for financial assistance to complete the Accounting Studies Post-Degree Diploma Program at Douglas College and was approved.

Just prior to graduation, Kerry returned to meet with her Case Manager, to formalize a plan and assist her in returning to work as soon as possible. Kerry was then referred to attend job search focused workshops on resume development and interview skills to prepare for the job search process.

Kerry obtained part-time employment as an Accountant with the International Union of Operating Engineers, a position which became full time the day after she finished her school program! Kerry remains employed and is still in contact with the Port Moody WorkBC office after 24 weeks of confirmed employment.

She offered the following feedback in regards to Port Moody WorkBC Employment Services:

“I owe a lot of this success to the Work BC program and all the great people at the Port Moody office. This program really made a difference in my life; I don’t know if I would have been able to continue in accounting without it. It is so important to receive support after being laid off from a job. You and your team did an excellent job at this, and gave me a much-needed boost in confidence during a difficult time.

The training I received at Douglas College has given me much more confidence in my new position. I also wanted to thank you for providing excellent feedback on my resume and cover letter. When applying for jobs, I’ve never had so many replies, and for the jobs I really wanted. I had to turn down a number of interviews after I accepted my job. This would not have been possible without the Work BC program.

I’d also like to mention that the Port Moody office runs this program very well, and offers valuable support at a much-needed time. You were always professional, knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. Thank you again for making this possible! I hope this exceptional program is available for others to enjoy in the future. I also hope that your office continues to be a place for people to come when they need support in looking for work.”
