Making a Career Change – November 2013
Bill* has extensive experience as a Distribution Coordinator in the film and video technology rental industry. Although he had been laid off before, he enjoyed steady employment for the last 20 years. However, with the technology rental industry in decline and the film industry facing a downturn, Bill found himself struggling to find work. When he first visited the WorkBC Centre, he had been unemployed for almost a year.
Bill met with a Case Manager and together they agreed that career planning was a logical first step. Bill started exploring areas where he could use his existing skills, such as warehouse and distribution management in the retail sector, heavy equipment and construction, as well as logistics. He also worked on updating his resume, improving his computer skills and learning about social networking through LinkedIn.
Bill participated in three workshops: Winning Resumes, Self-Marketing, and Interview Skills, and found them really helpful in moving his job search forward. He started attending interviews and connected with recruiters. In November he accepted a job offer as a Distribution Associate with a local Equipment Sales and Rental company.
We wish you the best of luck in your new position!
