Job Search: The Employer’s Perspective

If you have ever asked for advice on your resume, cover letter or what it takes to find a job, you would have discovered that opinions vary widely. But as the organizer of the 2015 B.C. Labour Market Conference Christian Saint Cyr says, the only opinion that matters is the employer’s.

The B.C. Labour Market Conference brought together recruitment specialists from the BC Public Service, four major health authorities (Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Island Health, and Providence Health Care), TD Bank, Delta Hotels and Resorts, and rapidly expanding tech companies including Navarik Corp, Picatic and Payfirma. Other participating companies were Scott Construction Group (residential construction), Taiga Building Products (wood and paper), and Garden Protein (food manufacturing). Altogether, there were over 22 employers represented at the forum which took place at SFU Harbour Centre on July 30 and 31, 2015.

The speakers shared information about their hiring needs and what they are looking for in a candidate. The one key message that was communicated by everyone, it was that they are looking for candidates with passion – people who are committed to growing their career and making a difference, candidates who are proactive, motivated and driven to expanding their skill set. Although they may not advertise for personality, these employers hire candidates whose attitude and values fit with their organizational culture.

To be successful in this hiring climate, it is important to make your job search both personal and to be pro-active:

  • Look for opportunities to talk to existing employees and ask them questions about the corporate culture and what makes someone a good fit for the organization.
  • Follow up with hiring managers to ensure that you understand the requirements of the job and then create a well-structured resume that addresses the employer’s needs. If there is a contact person added at the bottom of the job posting, it’s because your calls are welcome.
  • Target your resume to the job: “make it crystal clear” says Susan Wood, Director of Hiring Strategies from the BC Public Service.
  • Ensure that your LinkedIn profile is complete and reflects the same information as your resume. Cheryl Nakamoto, President and Managing Partner at McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group, an established employment agency in Vancouver emphasized the need to have ‘integrity in communicating’ with recruiters and employers. Don’t try to be crafty with your language if you have an employment gap. Instead, explain why you needed to take a break from working, be it for a parental leave or to provide care for a family member.
  • Be resourceful in increasing your exposure through social networks, job boards, industry referral networks, business networks, recruitment agencies, and the community.
  • Don’t fall victim of industry misconceptions. Elaine Lai, Regional Training Manager of Delta Hotels and Resorts, was passionate about describing the numerous benefits of working for the hospitality industry in BC. People often think that working in hospitality is just for young people who don’t mind receiving minimum wages. That cannot be further from the truth. Delta Hotels, for example, has been selected as one of Canada’s 50 Best Employers because they create numerous training and development opportunities for their employees. 65% of the executive positions in the company are filled by internal candidates, and peer-to-peer recognition programs offer incentives for increased performance.
  • Be prepared – when connecting with employers, make sure that you are really well versed in their products, services and structure – they want to know why you have chosen them and reading their website is not good enough.
  • Practice responding to behavioural interview questions. Many employers use evidence-based interviewing to select candidates, so you need to be prepared to provide examples of how you demonstrated competencies, such as client service, leadership, initiative and team work.
